Regional & Global Exchanges
As part of the Global Project, the Global Executing Agency will host three regional exchanges (in Africa, Asia, and Latin America) and one global exchange on climate change for IPLCs this project year (July 1, 2016-June 30, 2017).
The Burkina Faso National Executing Agency IUCN supported the first DGM regional exchange, held in Ouagadougou in July, 2016. The training included participants from 13 different countries from both FIP and non-FIP countries.
A global exchange was held in Marrakesh, Morocco in November 2 – 4, 2016 prior to COP22. 22 participants from 15 countries representing Asia, Africa, and Latin America including indigenous peoples networks attended this workshop that focused on IPLC engagement in Climate Policy and Finance. 20 of these participants extended their stay in Marrakech to participate in COP22.
These exchanges mostly target individuals from FIP and Non FIP countries who have demonstrated an interest in engaging in climate change and sustainable forest management initiatives. The candidates are familiar with REDD+ and programs like UN-REDD and FCPF, and have a willingness and interest to engage in these processes long-term and share knowledge and disseminate information with their communities.
The content of each exchange is planned with input from members of the Global Steering Committee. In addition, the DGM GSC in coordination with the NSC nominates exchange participants based on their ability to fulfill the earlier description, along with fitting the below criteria:
1. The participant has in-depth knowledge of indigenous peoples and local communities in their country.
2. The participant is indigenous or a member of a local community.
3. The participant is actively engaged in local context issues related to forests and sustainable development.
4. Ideally, the participant has engaged with other conferences and/or networks related to climate change or forests.
