What is DGM Global?

The Dedicated Grant Mechanism (DGM) is a community-led program designed to increase the role of Indigenous Peoples and local communities (IPLCs) in climate action and sustainable forestry. Most of the DGM's support is provided at local and national levels through DGM country projects, but it is also important for IPLC voices to be recognized and respected at regional and global scales. The Global Learning and Knowledge Exchange Project (DGM Global) works to meet this need.

"to organize and facilitate knowledge exchange, learning and capacity building for IPLCs at regional and global levels, and to strengthen the networks and alliances of IPLC organizations within and across regions with a view to enhancing their representation and voice in regional and global policy fora"

DGM Global Activities

The most prominent activities conducted by DGM Global each year are the project's learning exchanges. Each year, DGM Global brings together Indigenous Peoples and local communities from around the world for three regional exchanges (Africa, Asia, and Latin America) and one global exchange planned around the annual Conference of the Parties (COP) of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC). At these exchanges, participants share their traditional knowledge and experience with the DGM, and they learn critical skills and knowledge for engaging in policy- and decision-making related to sustainable forestry and climate change at local, national, regional, and global levels. To date, DGM Global has welcomed over 150 representatives of Indigenous Peoples and local communities from over 30 countries at these exchanges. For more information on past and upcoming exchanges, please click here.

DGM Global also supports the participation of Indigenous Peoples and local communities in major international policy discussions, such as the UNFCCC Conference of the Parties, the United Nations Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues (UNPFII), and meetings of the Forest Investment Program, among others. Details of the latest DGM involvement in these major international events can be found on the project's blog.

Global Steering Committee

DGM Global conducts its activities under the leadership and oversight of a Global Steering Committee (GSC) of IPLC representatives from the DGM pilot countries, as well as one member from a non-DGM country to represent the broader interests and priorities of IPLCs at regional and global scales. The GSC performs several critical functions for the project, including the adoption of an annual budget and workplan and participation in several subcommittees and working groups.

The reports from previous GSC meetings are available here: Year 1 (Bali) | Year 2 (Kinshasa) | Year 3 (Brasilia)

The 4th Annual Meeting of the Global Steering Committee will take place from April 23-25 in Arlington, Virginia.
